Sacha Baron Cohen Invites Sarah Palin To Be Golden Globes Date Following His Nomination For ‘Who Is America?’

Deadline — Mike Fleming Jr and Nellie Andreeva

Sacha Baron Cohen has been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a TV series Musical or Comedy for the coterie of characters he played in the satirical interview series Who Is America? While some will read into this that his inclusion in the series and not limited series category means that there might be an encore for his groundbreaking summer Showtime series, Baron Cohen at this point only wanted to thank the people who unwittingly helped him get there.

“I appreciate the Hollywood Foreign Press for recognizing me, which luckily is something that none of the guests on the show did,” he said. “This is such a special honour for me as the HFPA are always among the first to really appreciate my ever evolving humour. I am humbled to be recognised among such a wonderful group of nominees, all of whom I admire. This show was a labour of love for over two years. It is a shame they overlooked the amazing performances by the rest of the cast, particularly Dick Cheney and Roy Moore. Meanwhile Ms Palin, despite being cut from the show, I hope you will accept my invitation to be my date for the ceremony.”

Cheney, Moore and Palin were all targets of Baron Cohen on the show, which was in the vein of his breakout hit movie that earned the British comedian/provocateur his first Golden Globe nomination, the 2006 Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.

Palin drummed up publicity for Who Is America? ahead of its premiere when she publicly accused Baron Cohen of duping her in a “bizarre, really embarrassing, humiliating” interview in which she said he had claimed to be a handicapped U.S. military veteran. Showtime disputed Palin’s account that Cohen had presented himself as a veteran.

The interview never aired. Instead, Baron Cohen took a jab at Palin in the credits for the finale of This Is America?, thanking her as a “Special Publicity Consultant (Inadvertent).”
