Palmieri for two years before joining the Columbia Project on International Civil Procedure. 1963, She began her career as a law professor, first at Rutgers and then at Columbia. While at Columbia, she became the first woman to earn tenure. . 1970s, She directed the Women’s Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union. While director of the project, she fought gender discrimination by arguing six cases in front of the U.S. Supreme Court. 1980 , President Jimmy Carter appointed her to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. She would serve on the court for 13 years. 1993, Ginsburg was appointed as Associate Justice to the Supreme Court by President Bill Clinton. She was the second woman ever named to the court. 1996, She wrote the majority opinion in the case United States v. Virginia. The case held that qualified women must be allowed admittance into the Virginia Military Institute. In her dissent for the case Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Ginsburg called upon Congress to change the statute of limitations portion of the Title VII law. . The case dealt with equal pay for women whose qualifications match their male colleagues. 2009, Congress responded with the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. A copy of this act would hang on the wall of Justice Ginsburg's office. 2010, When Justice John Paul Stevens left the court in 2010, Ginsburg became the most senior liberal justice.
