A Cook County correctional officer who conspired with an inmate to buy what he thought was stolen merchandise has been charged with felony theft, authorities said. In a news release issued Friday, the Cook County's state's attorney's office said 48-year-old Fernando Munoz of Cicero was arrested during an undercover operation.

Cook County Jail Executive Director Cara Smith said the judge was taken to a nearby hospital Thursday. The injuries suffered by the judge during the attack were not considered life-threatening.

That was the text message Misael Chavez says he received from his then-girlfriend Jessica Cruz on Nov. 4, 2011, a few hours after prosecutors say she strangled their newborn son, wrapped him in a plastic bag and left him in a trash can after giving birth in the restroom of a Salvation Army store in Streamwood. Cruz, then 19, was charged with first-degree murder.

A Cook County judge was taken to the hospital after a defendant in a criminal case attacked him at the Maywood courthouse Thursday afternoon, authorities said. A Cook County sheriff's deputy came to the rescue of the judge, but when the sheriff's deputy Tased the man who had rushed toward the bench, the officer also appeared to have accidentally Tased the judge.

A multi-agency search is underway for a man believed to be lost in the Cook County Forest Preserves near Palos Park. John Michael Cunningham Jr., 27, of Chicago, was last seen around 10:45 a.m. Thursday near a forest preserve area at 104th Street and McCarthy Road.
