A high-ranking leader of the Traveling Vice Lords street gang who directed a violent west side drug-trafficking conspiracy was sentenced today to 35 years in federal prison after a judge ruled that he "very likely" murdered an off-duty Chicago police detective and a woman in August 2008. The defendant, JASON AUSTIN, 32, also known as "J Rock," of Chicago, a "5 Star Universal" TVL with seven prior felony convictions, was convicted of federal narcotics charges in February 2012 after a trial in U.S. District Court.

A registered sex offender from Summit was arrested last week after he was observed talking to several young children outside of St. Rene Elementary School in the 6300 block of South New England Avenue in Chicago, police said. Nicholas Heisler, 20, was arrested in Indiana for the murder of Elmer Brown and is awaiting extradition, a Chicago Police source confirmed Thursday morning. Authorities do not expect him to arrive in Illinois for a few days.
