Authorities who learned that a man who confessed to killing several women whose bodies were found in abandoned buildings in Indiana may have traveled to the South suburbs say their search of abandoned homes in the area has come up empty. The Cook County sheriff's office started searching abandoned homes on Wednesday and continued on Thursday.

With just 12 days left before Election Day in one of the nation's most closely watched races for governor, Illinois officials are beginning to deal with complications from balloting procedures to how soon they can count votes. Attorney General Lisa Madigan says in an official opinion that no votes should be counted before the close of polls on Nov. 4. Elections authorities in Chicago and suburban Cook County say if they can't even prepare votes for counting before then, vote-total reporting will be seriously delayed.

The 44-year-old man was stabbed in the chest and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police said. The Cook County medical examiner's office could not immediately confirm the fatality.

On the day he was scheduled to leave prison after serving a five-year sentence for burglary, a suburban man found out he was charged in the stabbing death of a woman 12 years ago. "We got him just before he was going to get out," Bedford Park police Detective A. Smuskiewicz said of 40-year-old Steven Podkulski, who was arrested Wednesday.

Tinley Park is moving to purchase 280 acres formerly occupied by the Tinley Park Mental Health Center and Howe Developmental Center. In a letter to Simone McNeil, acting director of the Illinois Department of Central Management Services, Mayor Ed Zabrocki says the village attorney has been directed to draft a purchase contract for $4.16 million, with the money placed in installments in an escrow account until a tentative closing date of June 19. "We want to make sure we can control what goes there," the mayor said.

An elderly Midlothian resident who had been missing since November was found dead this month in a pile of tree branches at an Oak Forest park, authorities said. An Oak Forest Park District employee was spraying for weeds Oct. 10 along a small creek next to a playground at the park in the 15500 block of Waverly Avenue and saw what appeared to be two human legs sticking out from a bundle of tree branches, according to police.
